Unbreakable Beer Glasses, Part 2

Before Brew @ Hugh commences this evening, let’s review the two other styles of beer glasses you’ll be testing. Like the other glasses featured, these are made of titanium crystal, which makes them resistant to breakage and totally dishwasher safe!

The Goblet
The Goblet is used to serve Belgian and other bigger, bolder ales. This glass typically holds a full 16 ounce beer with room for head. Carbonation is lower in these brews and the wider mouth of the goblet releases it properly.

The goblet is designed to showcase color, to allow shorter head retention, and to really open up the aroma for a complex beer (and to open up the nose on higher alcohol beers).

Hugh’s goblet holds 17.2 ounces and costs $12 a glass.

The Ale
The Ale glass is a bit of a hybrid: it has the height and narrowness of the pilsner and the wider, tapering rim of the goblet. It is ideal for lighter but full-flavored ales and is an excellent all-purpose beer glass.

The Ale is designed to showcase color, feature carbonation, and provide a wider opening for the aroma. The ridge on the stem allows for easy holding without your body heat warming up the beer.

The Ale glass holds 13.5 ounces and costs $12 a glass.

Join us for Brew @ Hugh, our beer tasting/glass testing event tonight from 5:30 to 7:30! All the featured glassware can be ordered at 20% off during the event!

Unbreakable Beer Glasses, Part 1

With Brew @ Hugh just a day away, it’s time to showcase the glassware you (should you show up) will be testing.

All the specialty beer glassware at Hugh is made not of lead crystal – oh no - but of titanium crystal. Schott Zweisel, the German manufacturer, developed a process where they use titanium instead of lead in the crystal to produce a glass that has all the clarity and brilliance of lead crystal but is more break-resistant, will not cloud or spot and is completely dishwasher safe!

The glasses themselves are still as refined as any lead crystal counterparts, but the durability makes them the perfect glassware for those of us without household staff.

And are they really unbreakable? No, I lied. If you throw them against a wall they will probably break. But they’ll survive anything a pint glass can survive, only with a lot more panache.

The Pilsner
A pilsner glass is used to serve many types of light beers, but is intended for its namesake, the pilsner. Pilsner glasses are generally smaller than a pint glass - usually 12 or 14 ounces - and are tall, slender and tapered. A true Pilsner glass has an even taper without curvature.

Pilsner glasses are made to showcase the color, clarity and effervescence of the Pilsner style, as well as maintain a nice head.

The Hugh-sanctioned Pilsner holds 13.9 ounces and runs $12 a glass.

The Bavarian
A Bavarian wheat beer glass is used to serve – what else? – wheat beer, also known also as Weizenbier. This German glass generally holds at least 17 ounces with room for head. With their thin walls and length, the glasses showcase the beer's color and allow for much headspace to contain the fluffy, sexy heads association with the style. Forget the lemon garnish, the citric will kill the head.

Wheat Beer glasses are specifically produced to take on volume and head, while locking in the aromas associated with the beer style.

Hugh’s Bavarian Wheat Beer glass has a generous 22 ounce capacity (plenty of room for head) and runs $15 a glass.

Tomorrow two more glasses will be showcased - and remember that any glassware ordered during Brew @ Hugh will be 20% off!

Brew @ Hugh

Here at Hugh we think it is important that you use the right tool for the job.  And that extends to drinking.

Next Wednesday, as part of Detroit Beer Week, Hugh will host "Brew @ Hugh," an educational beer tasting.  Here you can try different beers in the glasses that were designed to bring out the best in the brew.

The glassware is all made of titanium crystal, a stronger, more brilliant and durable alternative to lead crystal, and for the night of the event all glassware, normally priced from $12-14 a glass, can be ordered at 20% off.

Join us this Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 for a little brew at Hugh!
